Lyricist: Akbar Allahabadi
Singer: Ghulam Ali
—
मय = Wine
ख़म=Curls of the Hhair (ख़म means “Bend ” or “Curve”, but here can be thought of meaning curls of the hair)
मकसूद = Intended, Proposed
सियाह= स्याह = Black
बख़्त = Fate
रिन्द = Drunkard
I have heard this ghazal but some shers were different, guess it’s a long one and ghulam ali sang it in parts. It’s a very spiritual ghazal.
“kham” here means the tangle in the hair.
“bakht” means trouble, pain etc.
Bakht means fate…
Siyah means black…
Siyah-bakht means ill-fate or Bad luck
Some shers recorded in other versions of this song by Ghulam Ali:
Na tajurbakari se vaaiz ki yeh baatein hain
Iss rang ko kya jaane pucho jo kabhi pi hai
har jarra chamakata hai anwar-e-ilahi se
har saans yeh kahti hai, hum hai to khuda bhi hai
“gar siyaa bakht…” mein ‘dil’ ki jagah ’til’ paDhaa thaa ek jagah. falls in line with the meaning too..
nopes ..!! siyah means syahi or (black)
According to me It means If I was supposed to be black.. I should have become Til (b beauty spot )or that julf () on your face.
“Kham” means a curve can also be used for wave or tangled hair.
“Bakht” means Fate and Siyah Bakht is ill fated. same as Kam-bakht
correctin.. zulf hota, tere rukhsaar pe ya “Til” hota not “dil”(Rukhsaar means Cheek)
Correction 2 .. na unka kham nikaltaa hai na “mera” dil nikaltaa hai (hamara does not fit in proper meter)
Thanks for the word meanings people. Have updated it,
Rajan: About the correction 2 – I write what I listen to and this is what Ghulam Ali sings.
Let me say a couple of things about this particular ghazal.Generally,it is believed that this ghazal is about peena-pilana(taking liquor). It is not really, my dear friends!People ,who have read other works of Akbar Allahabadi know very well how he use to write.Incidenatlly,he never even touched wine in all of his life(like a true devout muslim). This particular piece of poetry has a sense of history and a particular background. It was written when the differences between the congress and Muslim League were at its peak. They were totally divided and fighting with each other. The English were very successful in propagating their(or infamous) famous”Divide and Rule policy”.Sir Syed (Founder of AMU) was a prominenet Muslim leader and was with british establishments.Even at this point of time Akbar Allahabadi was talking about the unity of Hindus and Muslims.Detractors of Akbar Allahabadi concluded that Hindus have offered some Nasha (liquor) to him and this is the reason he was talking totally out of tune and context! Akbar Allahabadi wrote this particular ghazal to address them.If you listen even to the small peice of this ghazal sung beautifully by Ghulam Ali,you may notice that in one of shers that “Us may se nahi matlab jo ………. Maksood(meaning) hain us may se dil hi mein chanati hain………..
Hope it makes sense to at least some of you!!
Bye for now.

If my memory serves me right it has mentioned in “discovery of India “by Jawahar Lal Nehru.
As regards the meaning of shers written by Raghvendra,I would try to translate the equivalent(and not exact) meaning of the urdu words for you:
tajurbakari means experience.
Vaaiz means the person who preaches.Mulla (a typival muslim priest) is meant here.
Zarra means everything
anwar-e-ilahi means grace of god
Happy reading.

For Alia and others who do not know Urdu language and wish to get a Latin version of this ghazal try Turkish site or web translater.

Its like you read my mind! You appear to know a lot about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you could do with a few pics to drive the message home a bit, but other than that, this is wonderful blog. A great read. I will cer…
Hangama hai kyon barpa rendion is based on raag Darbari on which many popular filmy songs are based and that is why straight way it strikes ones cord to make it very attractive. Moreover, the way GHULAM ALI has sung , which is really commedable
i like this gazal sung by gulam ali
What to write.Simply bowled over and the boundaries fade off.Good God ,a partition of this sort ; we have not lost a portion of land mass when India got divided, but a part of the soul and beauty spots such as Ghulam Ali.
I like a sher of Akbar allahbadi that I find here
